4 Portland events to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month

Although Portland offers a rich variety of cultural festivals, some observances still fly under the radar — such as South Asian Heritage Month, which runs from July 18 to Aug. 17. Originating in the United Kingdom in 2020, the month highlights the cultures and histories of countries such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and the Maldives.

While not formally recognized in the United States, South Asian communities in Oregon have taken the lead in celebrating their heritage through grassroots efforts. In Washington County, home to more than 23,000 South Asian residents, community-led efforts have helped showcase the region’s cultural richness through events like the annual India Festival, featuring music, dance, food and storytelling.

This season, there are several opportunities to engage with South Asian culture throughout Oregon. From August through October, here are four events worth marking on your calendar…
