The standoff on the rooftop of a Portland apartment building concluded without the use of force as the man wanted for numerous crimes surrendered to police on Saturday. This update comes after a morning where parts of East Burnside Street were shut down, affecting traffic and leading to several apartment evacuations. The Portland Police Bureau confirmed that the residents are now able to safely return to their homes, and the street has been reopened.
Earlier in the day, tactical teams, including the Portland Police’s Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), were called to the scene as the adult male suspect had climbed onto the roof. Attempts to initially contact and peacefully convince the suspect to surrender were unsuccessful. The police report details that officers responded to a domestic violence-related call in the 10400 block of East Burnside Street at 7:26 a.m. upon where the incident began to unfold, with the man first attempting to evade arrest by exiting onto the rooftop.
The area was isolated by authorities, and despite the challenges faced, no immediate danger was communicated to the public during the incident. However, police emphasized traffic disruption along East Burnside Street from Northeast 102nd to Northeast 108th Avenue due to the tactical response.
