Community leaders skeptical over drop in homicides: ‘Don’t let the quiet fool you’

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Community leaders are reacting to a report that shows homicides are down 51% the first half of this year compared to the same time last year.

Lionel Irving, a leader in the effort to reduce gun violence in Portland, is skeptical.

“I am concerned, and I get frustrated when they put the numbers out because I know the work is good. I don’t want to discredit the work, but it’s not the finish line,” Irving told KATU. “It is frustrating to me because I go talk to mothers and fathers. They’re not celebrating victory. They’re mourning.”…
