City of Portland to pay out $300K to man who pleaded guilty in supposed overdose death: ‘Thought it had to be a mistake’

PORTLAND, Ore. — The city of Portland has approved a $300,000 settlement for a man who previously pleaded guilty and served years in jail after distributing heroin that caused an overdose — but it turned out that the defendant, Adam Gregg, was led to believe the victim had died, only to find out later that he was still alive.

“I thought it had to be a mistake because I had just spent over 5 years in prison taking accountability for a death that never happened,” Gregg said. “I also felt an immense relief. The worst thing I had ever done, and all the people I thought that I had hurt who loved him, just immediately evaporated.”

Senior Deputy City Attorney Mike Porter said the Multnomah County District Attorney at the time, John Copic, wrote to Gregg’s attorney, saying that if he didn’t plead guilty, the consequences could be severe…
