PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — A newly filed lawsuit claims both Multnomah County and the sheriff’s department violated Oregon’s Sanctuary Law. The lawsuit was filed by both Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition (PIRC) and Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice (IMIrJ).
According to the lawsuit, Multnomah County’s jail contract with the US Marshals Service “allows people to be held for immigration purposes even after they post bail, complete a sentence, or are ordered released by a judge.” It asks for a court order to require the jail to modify its contract with the US Marshals Service in an effort to stop what is known as “ICE holds.”
According to the Oregon Law Center, which filed the lawsuit, the lawsuit asks for two things: To stop holding people for immigration purposes or to terminate the contract if the US Marshals Service refuses.
