Parents-to-be, former workers left in dark after abrupt closure of Camas surrogacy agency

CAMAS, Wash. (KOIN) — Controversy has arisen in Camas after a popular surrogacy agency abruptly closed earlier this month, leaving families and employees wondering what to do next during an already vulnerable time.

Former employees to the owner of Surro Connections said she is under federal investigation after clients say they didn’t get paid. More than $5 million could be lost — impacting hundreds of families nationwide — according to Sarah Shaffer, one former staff member.

Surro Connections operated out of Northeast Camas, working with families across the country to help them have babies through a third party. Shaffer, a mother of three, worked in the marketing department and was surrogacy coordinator with the agency.
