Meet the tiny Crater Lake newt Oregon Zoo conservationists are fighting to save from extinction

A small but mighty cohort of endangered newts is showing promise in Portland.

Last August, the Mazama newt — an amphibian species found only in Crater Lake — moved into the Oregon Zoo’s conservation lab as part of an emergency effort to keep its population off the brink of extinction. The project was a collaboration between the zoo, High Desert Museum and National Park Service.

Several months later, Oregon Zoo staff say the newts are doing well…
