‘Dismantling stability’: Families speak out against closure of small Vancouver high school

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Parents are speaking out against Vancouver Public Schools’ decision to shutter a program that offers smaller class sizes to students.

During public comment at a VPS Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, several families condemned the upcoming shutdown of Vancouver Flex Academy. The district informed community members of the small high school’s closure in an email in December — the day after it was addressed in a board meeting.

The announcement came as VPS leaders revealed efforts to cut the district’s spending by $21 million for the 2026-27 school year. Several testifiers argued the decision was made unilaterally, and without adequate notice to the families who would be impacted.

Parents also expressed concern the closure would disproportionately impact students who are on the autism spectrum, and those facing mental health disorders like depression and anxiety…
