Man died unexpectedly but not from injuries during Gresham bar brawl, jury finds

A Portland man died unexpectedly last year, but not because he was injured by a fellow combatant during a bar brawl, a Multnomah County jury found Thursday.

Richard Henderson and David M. Lomas, acquaintances through a drug connection, had finished sparring on a sidewalk outside the Platinum Pub, 4245 S.E. 182nd Ave., on Nov. 6, when Lomas collapsed and emergency responders rushed to the Gresham strip mall.

In a probable cause affidavit, prosecutor Madeline Loeb wrote that an exterior surveillance video showed Henderson “sprawled” on top of Lomas during the fight and holding him in a “bear hug” — and argued that Lomas died because Henderson fractured three of his ribs, causing a collapsed lung…
