Authorities arrest suspect in fire that torched prominent Portland deli

Portland authorities arrested a 56-year-old woman in connection with an early morning fire at Elephants Delicatessen on Northwest 22nd Avenue Tuesday, the Portland Fire Bureau said.

The bureau identified the woman as Catherine E. Stough and said she’d been booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on suspicion of reckless burning and criminal mischief.

The agency said Stough was using an open flame torch to look in garbage cans near the deli when she unintentionally lit flammable material inside. The “human caused” fire ultimately spread to the roof and interior of the deli…
