Failed Portland mayoral candidate files federal lawsuit over campaign finance fines

The Portland city auditor levied thousands of dollars in fines against mayoral hopeful Rene Gonzalez in 2024. Now he’s suing the city, saying the fines, which were later overturned by a Multnomah County judge, unfairly damaged his campaign.

In a federal lawsuit filed Monday, Gonzalez alleged the city violated his due process rights by failing to give him a “meaningful opportunity” to respond to allegations he misused taxpayer funds and didn’t promptly return unlawful donations. The lawsuit seeks compensatory damages to be determined at trial.

It names the city of Portland, City Auditor Simone Rede and Deputy City Auditor Reed Broderson…
