Sinkhole swallows vehicle at Norfolk exit ramp

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A sinkhole opened up near the base of the I-264 West exit ramp onto East City Hall Ave. Tuesday afternoon and swallowed up a vehicle.

WAVY sent a crew to the scene. Images show the front half of a vehicle submerged in the hole.

Police confirmed a woman in the car was unable to open the door. An officer went into the water and was able to free her from the vehicle. She was not injured. A WAVY viewer captured that moment and shared her photos with us.

Norfolk Police sent out a social media alert just after 4 p.m. about the situation. Units arrived on scene and determined there was a water main break…
