‘I want to cry; this is truly a blessing’: Norfolk woman with heart disease has different, safer place to call home

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — From the backyard of her new place in Grandy Village, Doreen White was at peace as she read from the book of Ecclesiastes. The public housing community, not far from the Elizabeth River, was quiet, clean and in harmony with nature.

“This is my new place,” the 68-year-old White said. “Oh, look at this. I’m enjoying it better.”

Her new home in Grandy Village is an upgrade from the cramped and dangerous conditions she faced while living in the Young Terrace neighborhood. The neighborhood is slated for demolition as part of the St. Paul’s Area Transformation. “In my bathroom, I got all kinds of ramps up in here, so I don’t fall,” said White while proudly pointing to safety grab bars and a seat that were installed before she moved in. The unit also includes a front yard wheel chair ramp and grab bars.
