Charges for man accused of killing wife certified to grand jury

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — David Varela, accused of killing his wife, had his preliminary hearing today and was charged with first-degree murder and concealment of a dead body, certified to the grand jury.

The defense tried to lessen the first-degree murder charge down to a second-degree charge, but that did not stand.

Lina Guerra’s body was found in a freezer inside a Downtown Norfolk apartment in Feb. 2026. Her family reported her missing on Feb. 5 after they had not heard from her in more than two weeks…
