Norfolk woman receives one-year sentence for animal cruelty after pit bull found dead in apartment

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk woman was sentenced to one year in prison after a dead pit bull and a severely malnourished one were found inside her apartment.

On Oct. 23, 2024, a maintenance worker at Oakmont North Apartments noticed a rotten odor and many flies coming from an apartment. Two emaciated dogs could be seen through a window shut inside a room covered in filth with one of the dogs appearing to be dead, according to court documents. He proceeded to call the Norfolk Police Animal Protection Unit for a well-being check.

A humane officer then arrived and confirmed a male pit bull mix was deceased and in an advanced stage of decomposition. A female pit bull was severely malnourished, sick and covered in sores. Court documents stated the room the dogs were in had no food or water, was soiled with urine and feces and was infested with maggots and flies…
