CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Chesapeake City Council passed an initiating resolution asking the city’s planning commission to develop local zoning and land use rules for cannabis businesses before recreational marijuana retail sales become legal in Virginia.
Recreational retail marijuana sales will be legal in Virginia starting July 1, 2027. The Virginia Cannabis Control Authority can begin accepting business applications for retail licenses as early as February 1, 2027.
The resolution, adopted Sept. 22, 2026, requests the planning commission consider and make recommendations on amendments to the Chesapeake Zoning Ordinance to provide appropriate local zoning and land use requirements for businesses licensed by the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority…
