VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A woman was hospitalized, and her dog was injured after a large pole reportedly fell onto a vehicle in a construction zone on Elbow Road on Monday evening.
The driver, Joyce Hackenberg, is recovering in the hospital following the accident, which occurred about 5:30 p.m. in an area where road construction remains underway.

Photos from the scene show an enormous pole collapsed onto Hackenberg’s black SUV. A friend of the driver said the outcome could have been far more severe.
“It could have been a lot worse. There was an excavator that I think helped soften the blow,” said Sasha Jones, a friend of the driver. “It hit that first and…so if that hadn’t been there, it would have been the full brunt of the impact.”
