Homeowner charged with murder after human remains found in backyard in Virginia

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth Police said Wednesday they had found the dismembered remains of a man in the backyard of an Elliott Avenue home and charged the homeowner with first-degree murder.

Gregory Michael Coffey, 53, has been charged with first-degree murder and defiling a dead, human body, police confirmed during a news conference.

Police announced Wednesday during the news conference that human remains were found adjacent to 3404 Elliott Avenue, and that they’re investigating the case as a homicide. There has been a heavy police presence at the property for several weeks.

Portsmouth Police initially received a report Sept. 2 from Raymond Poole saying his brother, Gordon Randolph Tillman Jr. was missing. The next day, Poole then reportedly went to the Elliott Avenue residence to look for his brother, who was known to frequent the house…
