88-year-old driver charged with DUI after I-264 wrong-way crash

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – An 88-year-old man has been charged with driving under the influence following a wrong-way crash on I-264 in Virginia Beach Monday evening.

According to VDOT, the crash was reported in the eastbound lanes near the Rosemont Road exit around 4:45 p.m.

Virginia State Police said the preliminary investigation determined the driver of a 2005 Audi was traveling in the wrong direction in the westbound lanes of I-264 when it struck a Ford transit van and a Nissan Sentra.

A WAVY viewer captured video of the crash on her vehicle’s dashcam. You can see a vehicle approaching in one of the middle lanes, then hit the two other vehicles, as state police described.

The driver of the Audi, 88-year-old James Brown, and his passenger were taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital with injuries considered not life-threatening.

Brown was charged with driving under the influence.

State Police said the drivers of the other two vehicles, a passenger and two dogs involved in the crash were not injured.
