Man sentenced for shooting at a dog for barking in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A man has been sentenced on Friday for shooting at a dog in 2020.

Officials say that a Norfolk Circuit Court judge sentenced 35-year-old Neal Delanta Cook to four years in prison for shooting at a barking dog at a Fairmont Park home in January of 2020.

Court documents reveal that on Jan. 15, 2020, Cook and another person were walking past a home near Bapaume Avenue and Bellevue Avenue. Surveillance video from the home showed Cook shooting at the residence once a dog started barking.

Several bullets struck the home, but both the residents and the dog were unharmed in the incident.

Cook was arrested by Norfolk police on Feb. 12 where police recovered a firearm. Police say that Cook was prohibited from owning a gun due to a previous felony conviction.

Cook pleaded guilty to two counts of being a non-violent felon in possession of a firearm and one count of maliciously discharging a firearm in to an occupied building on Aug. 23, 2023.

Judge David Lannetti sentenced Cook to four years in prison and eight years suspended on the condition that Cook has no contact with the victims in addition to completing five years of uniform good behavior. Cook will serve this sentence consecutively to an additional sentence of a separate offense committed in Virginia Beach.
