Richmond woman charged with DUI manslaughter in Norfolk crash

NORFOLK, Va. (WRIC) — The Norfolk Police Department has charged a Richmond woman with DUI manslaughter after her passenger died in a single-vehicle crash.

Shortly before 4:45 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, officers were called to the 6900 block of Chesapeake Boulevard for a reported single-vehicle crash.

Upon their arrival, police found a car that had collided with a concrete pole and caught fire.

The vehicle’s passenger, now identified as Tynisha D. Southerland, 29, of Portsmouth, was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died from her injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, Jamika P. Ellis, 29, of Richmond, was charged with involuntary manslaughter DUI related.

“Ellis is currently being held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond,” a Norfolk police spokesperson said. “There were no other injuries were reported.”
