Revamped unit for high-risk pregnancies in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is set to unveil their revamped unit for high-risk pregnant women on Thursday.

The newly revamped unit will be unveiled on Feb. 1 at 9:30 a.m., and will be dedicated to providing care for high-risk pregnant women.

According to Sentara, this is the only unit in the region like this, allowing some woman to stay hospitalized in the 21-bed pre-natal unit for up to six months of their pregnancy.

The $1.2 million revamp includes newly renovated rooms, adding more space, new amenities, private bathrooms and improved air conditioning.

The pre-natal care unit was first introduced in 2014 to provide more targeted care for patients who develop complications during pregnancy. Since its opening, the unit has remained at near maximum capacity.

“There is a real need for more beds. We are the transfer center for all local hospitals for high-risk pregnant patients,” Angie Moore, clinical nurse manager said. “Our goal is to help woman stay pregnant and safe until the baby is a little bit older. We buy time to get the baby more stable.”
