“God’s Army” cross-country rally musters only 300 vehicles

In January 2024, a convoy of protesters, self-styled as “God’s Army,” embarked on a journey toward the Texas-Mexico border to protest against the immigration crisis. The convoy, organized under the banner “Take Our Border Back,” aims to draw attention to the dangers posed by open southern borders.

However, the turnout for the convoy, organized by a pair of conservative radio hosts, fell significantly short of expectations.

The organizers had predicted a massive turnout of 700,000 protesters, but the actual numbers were staggeringly lower. Reports indicate that the convoy had only 20 cars leave the starting point of Virginia Beach, Virginia. By the time it reached Texas, it had grown to around 50 cars; and when they reached their destination of Quemado, Texas, it numbered approximately 300 vehicles.

The organizers describe themselves as patriots, aiming to highlight the perceived threats and consequences of open southern borders. It has attracted a small mix of individuals, including militia-style groups, Christian nationalists, and others concerned with border security and immigration policies. Despite the lower-than-expected turnout, the organizers remained committed to their cause, emphasizing the significance of their movement as a “biblical, monumental moment.”
