Man sentenced in June 2021 shooting at car in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Malachi Handy was sentenced to 12 years in prison for his involvement in a deadly shooting in June 2021, according to court records.

On June 14, 2021, officers responded to calls for a gunshot wound near the intersection of Weblin Drive and Moorgate Court. 18-year-old Damon Julio Rodriguez-Kirkland was found shot and later died at the hospital.

Two groups of people had started shooting at a vehicle with Rodriguez-Kirkland inside.

Handy was one of two people wanted in connection to the incident. He pleaded guilty for his charges and was sentenced for participating in gang activity and malicious shooting at a car, according to court documents.

He received a 10 years sentence with four years suspended for two felony charges to be served consecutively.
