Cruise Passenger Banned for Life, Could Face 10-Year Prison Sentence

NORFOLK, Va. – A man has pleaded guilty to federal charges stemming from a violent assault on a Carnival Cruise Line ship last year, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Michael Truman, 39, admitted to assaulting another passenger on the Carnival Magic during a Canada/New England voyage on October 20, 2023. Court documents allege Truman was disruptive during a theater performance and attacked the victim after being asked to quiet down.

The assault involved Truman striking the victim with a cocktail glass and inflicting significant facial injuries requiring stitches. Truman initially claimed self-defense, but the DOJ investigation led to charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

Truman pleaded guilty on February 15, 2024, and faces a potential maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for August 29, 2024. Following the incident, Truman was confined to his cabin for the remainder of the cruise and banned from future Carnival sailings.
