Man sentenced to year in jail for ‘Kia Challenge’ vehicle theft and high-speed chase

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A 21-year-old man was sentenced to a year in jail for vehicle theft associated with the Kia challenge and eluding police.

Court documents show that on July 16, 2023 Collin Michael Harrison stole a 2015 Kia Rio and led police officers on chase down East Little Creek Road for nearly two miles.

During the police pursuit, Harrison crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed into a pickup truck. The crash totaled the Kia and caused minor injuries to both drivers. After totaling the Kia, Harrison jumped out and took off on foot until officers caught him near the intersection of East Little Creek Road and Chesapeake Boulevard.

After being treated for injuries at a hospital, Harrison admitted to stealing the vehicle using methods consistent with the Kia Challenge.

On Jan. 24, Harrison pleaded guilty to felony grand larceny of an automobile, felony hit and run, and felony eluding. His plea agreement called for the judge to sentence him to up to 12 months in jail. Judge Robert B. Rigney suspended another five years in prison on the conditions that Harrison complete two years of supervised probation and three years of uniform good behavior as well as pay restitution to the victim of the crash.
