HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – This week, the city of Hampton began to use traffic camera enforcement at specific locations during weekday rush hour.
According to a press release, the traffic cameras are part of a safety program and effort to discourage motorists from using residential neighborhoods as a detour to avoid highway congestion.
As of Thursday, Aug. 1, the cameras are now active at the following locations from 3-6 p.m. during the weekdays:
- Mallory Street Bridge in Phoebus
- Settlers Landing Road in front of the Hampton University campus
The enforcement is for safety for motorists attempting to access entrance ramps to eastbound I-64 headed toward the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.
During the month of August, violators will be given written warnings but no citations as part of a grace period. $50 fines for running red lights will begin next month on Sept. 1.
The city of Hampton says additional cameras will be added on Aug. 26. These will be placed in school zones to identify motorists who do not obey the reduced speed limits during school arrival and departure hours. A 30-day grace period will begin, after which the fine will be $100.
