Volunteer at Sentara VB General Hospital honored for 35 years of service

Jen Lewis stopped by Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital to present this week’s Everyday Hero Award to a long-time volunteer. Her name is Sally Williams.

Ms. Williams has been volunteering her time for 35 years. She arrives at least two days a week to her post at the front desk.

Sonia Cooper, a registered nurse with the hospital, shared her thoughts with Jen about Ms. Sally.

“At Sentara, our mission is to improve health every day… I think to have the dedication and commitment of a volunteer really expounds upon that mission and knowing that her value, and just making people feel reassured, is something we can’t measure,” said Sonia.

People walk through the doors of the hospital for many reasons. If patients are scared or uneasy about their visit, Sally knows just what to say to calm their nerves.

“When people are coming in and are scared, Ms. Sally is like a warm cup of soup. She’s a welcoming face and she really is an inspiration.”, according to volunteer coordinator Delores Reed.
