Sailors help prepare Norfolk classrooms for first day of school

More than 120 sailors stationed in Hampton Roads volunteered at 15 Norfolk schools Aug. 8 to help teachers prepare their classrooms for the first day of school.

The sailors helped with moving furniture, painting, setting up classrooms and other tasks school staff needed.

In its third year, Servicing Our Schools Day is a volunteer program partnership between the Navy and Norfolk Public Schools.

“They are doing so much work with so much joy,” Camp Allen Elementary School Assistant Principal AnnMarie Gunter said in a release. “We hear singing in the hallway as they are doing good work and I think that’s what they’re prepping our students to have a joyous opening to the school year.”

Along with Camp Allen, sailors also volunteered at Sewells Point, Suburban Park, Richard Bowling, Little Creek, W. H. Taylor and Mary Calcott elementary schools, Camp E.W. Young, Chesterfield Academy, the Academy for Discovery at Lakewood and Azalea Gardens and Ruffner middle schools, Lake Taylor School, Madison Alternative School and Norview High School.
