Chesapeake community helps brother and sister after man stole money jar from lemonade stand

WAVY News reported that the Chesapeake community helped 10-year-old Rebecca Caldwell and her 8-year-old brother Josh after a man stole a money jar from their lemonade stand.

Rebecca told Nexstar’s WAVY that as she started to pour the lemonade, the man quickly grabbed the jar with about $40 in it and ran off to his car.

Community support

Ten days after the theft, the children had another lemonade sale. The community came out in droves and purchased lemonade. People came from out of town to support the children. Motorcyclists lined the streets, and first responders came to help.

Rebecca and Josh received $6,200 after an outpouring of support. That was much more than the $40 stolen.

Thief arrested

Police arrested Esteban Santillan, 19, in connection with the theft that was caught on surveillance camera. He has been charged with petit larceny. Rebecca and Josh say they forgive the man.
