Man steals vehicle, replaces tag; arrested the same day in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man was arrested for driving a stolen vehicle on the same day it was reported stolen. He will now spend the next 10 months in jail.

On June 16, Norfolk police saw the driver of a white Jeep “abruptly” merge across several lanes of traffic. After running the tags, officers discovered they were registered to a different vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.

The driver turned onto Virginia Beach Boulevard and sped up, going 70 mph in a 30-mph zone. Due to safety concerns, police halted their pursuit, instead taking in the vehicle information and suspect description. A Flock alert later notified them of the car in the Norview area, near Alexander Street.

The suspect, 21-year-old Zykier Talib Urquhart, was seen next to the vehicle on Wellington Court. After a brief pursuit, he was arrested.

The keys to the Jeep were found on him. Officers ran the vehicle identification number of the Jeep, and found the Jeep to have been reported stolen out of Virginia Beach earlier that same day.
