Drug dealer sentenced as part of larger trafficking organization in NN

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk man was sentenced after he was part of a drug trafficking organization in the Tidewater area.

After street dealing as part of a larger drug trafficking organization, 46-year-old Deton Doson was caught after trading drugs for a gun.

In 2020, several government agencies began investigating the drug trafficking organization that were being supplied with kilogram-level quantities of cocaine, fentanyl and heroin. Dodson was just one of those members. On Nov. 5, 2021, he reportedly met with Edward Fonville for a transaction.

After being confronted by law enforcement, Dodson confessed that he traded cocaine to Fonville for the gun. After his arrest, Dodson gave Fonville a heads up that law enforcement was investigating him. Fonville remains a fugitive.

On Thursday, Dodson was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison for distribution of cocaine.

Thirteen other defendants have been convicted and sentenced in the drug trafficking case.

Milton Artis, 41, pleaded guilty on Oct. 3, 2022, to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl. On Jan. 23, 2023, Artis was sentenced to one year in prison.
