PPD: 14 businesses targeted in illegal gambling bust

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — More than a dozen Portsmouth businesses were targeted as part of a city-wide illegal gambling bust that led to the confiscation of more than $30,000 and 157 computers.

Portsmouth Police said they conducted the bust around 3 p.m. Sept. 19 after getting a number of complaints from residents about illegal gambling at local businesses.

The department’s special investigations unit led a department-wide operation that went after 14 Portsmouth businesses.

“Not in Portsmouth,” said Portsmouth Police Chief Stephen Jenkins in a statement. “Every citizen and businesses [are] expected to follow the law. I’m proud of our department. They did outstanding work.”

In addition to confiscating the money and computers, Portsmouth Police issued 11 summonses and made one probation violation arrest.
