NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A 25-year-old woman was sentenced to serve 30 days in jail on Wednesday after she pleaded guilty to purchasing a gun on behalf of a teenager.
On Sept. 1, 2023, 18-year-old Samonte Hill-Smallwood was detained after Norfolk police discovered a Glock G23 .40 caliber handgun with an illegal 30-round extended magazine in a vehicle he was in. Hill-Smallwood told officers that Tiyana Monae Johnson purchased the Glock for him at a Norfolk gun shop as a gift.
Investigators confirmed with the gun shop that Johnson did in fact purchase the Glock in March of 2023 when Hill-Smallwood was 17-years-old. Johnson filled out the information and criminal history check form but used a card with Hill-Smallwood’s billing information.
Initially, Johnson told investigators that the gun was stolen months following the purchase, but later admitted to buying the gun on Hill-Smallwood’s behalf.
Police charged Johnson with purchasing a firearm with the intent to transfer it to an ineligible person.
