At Home Store evacuated due to compactor fire

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — The Chesapeake Fire Department responded to a compactor fire at the At Home Store in Greenbrier Monday afternoon.

Officials said 30 and 40 customers inside the store had to be evacuated.

Around 11:51 a.m., crews were called to 1517 Sams Circle after employees noticed smoke coming into the store from a compactor behind the building.

Upon arrival, crews deployed hoselines to extinguish the fire and used a truck winch to pull the compactor away from the building.

Crews had the fire under control by 12:18 p.m. Medics evaluated two employees for smoke inhalation on the scene.

The At Home Store will remain closed for the remainder of the day as employees assess the smoke damage.

Investigators ruled the fire accidental.
