Multiple Norfolk shootings gather community together in prayer to end violence

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — It’s been a busy weekend for Norfolk Police. Two separate shootings have taken place, leaving two men dead and one injured.

Officers were first called to Wawa on East Little Creek Road around 5:50 a.m. on Saturday. Upon arrival, they located a man suffering from life-threatening injuries. 37-year-old Micah Bell was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

“You see all the deaths; although they’re claiming that the numbers have dropped in the city, they’re concluding that everything is fine. And the city, actually, Norfolk, is almost a city on fire,” said organizer Pastor Kaya Stephen.

Police responded quickly to a second Wawa on North Military Highway. Officers found a man with non-threatening injuries.

Police have since determined the two incidents are related. Miquail Owens has been charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm.

“We need strong leadership. So today, connecting with the violence took place over the weekend. All this ties in together. So this is a direction those like to take on the leadership role. Look at the values and be sincere in taking a stand,” said community activist Bilal Muhammad.
