VDOT: Over 1,300 cubic yards of concrete poured for HRBT Expansion Project

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) released an update on the progress at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project Monday morning.

Ground broken for historic $3.8 billion HRBT expansion project

According to a Facebook post from VDOT , several concrete trucks drove to the South Side Island over the course of 12 hours in order to provide the project with over 1,300 cubic yards of concrete.

The concrete will be used to form the roadway slab at the portal for the newly mined tunnel.

During the pour, two crews worked while quality control inspectors monitored to ensure proper placement of the concrete.

While this is not the largest pour on the project, crews said the pour is critical to service Mary, the Tunnel Boring Machine, which recently began work again boring a twin eastbound tunnel.
