Coast Guard believes ‘missing’ swimmer appears to be suspected false alert

FORT MONROE, Va. (WAVY) — A search for what was believed to be a missing swimmer Friday off Outlook Beach at Fort Monroe in Hampton has been called off, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Lt. Luke Pinneo with the Coast Guard said they suspended the search, as it appears to be a suspected false alert. They had multiple boats, a helicopter and several officials searching by land.

He said they concluded that it was a suspected false alert because there were no missing persons reported, no personal effects left on the beach and that there is no reason to believe there is a person in the water.

The U.S. Coast Guard and local EMS were searching for a missing swimmer Friday off Outlook Beach in Hampton, at Fort Monroe.

An earlier Facebook post by U.S. Coast Guard Sector Virginia gave a description of a person who they had believed to be missing. The search had started around 3:30 p.m. with help from Hampton EMS.
