NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man convicted of breaking into numerous cars on Old Dominion University’s campus was sentenced to more than a year in prison on Nov. 7, a release states.
32-year-old Derek Britton broke into three different cars on ODU’s campus from March 15-19.
Britton stole a tablet, tools, laptops, and the contents of those victims’ wallets, which included cash, IDs and credit cards, a release said. Video surveillance from the parking garage and nearby buildings showed him committing each of the thefts as well as the car he was driving.
Britton was not a student at the university, so ODU Police put out a BOLO with his description.
On March 22, an ODU officer saw Britton’s car parked improperly in a lot outside a campus restaurant and questioned Britton while he was sitting in the driver’s seat. The officer confirmed that Britton was the person of interest from the BOLO, and arrested him. The police searched the car and recovered many of the items stolen.
Britton was charged with felony credit card theft, three counts of misdemeanor larceny, and three counts of misdemeanor tampering with a vehicle.
