Gusty, rainy weather expected for Hampton Roads on Thursday

Hampton Roads residents are in for a gusty, rainy Thursday after several weeks without a major storm in the area.

The National Weather Service in Wakefield reports that the region will receive 1 to 3 inches of rain, with some areas having the chance to receive more. Showers will begin late Thursday afternoon and into the evening, and the heaviest rainfall is expected  later Thursday night into Friday.

“Recent dryness should limit widespread flooding, though localized flooding is possible in urban areas and areas of poor drainage,” the report reads.

Fallen leaves may also cause issues. The weather service reports that storm drains clogged with leaves may overflow, causing additional flooding. Tides increase Friday to minor and moderate flood levels, and 1 to 2 feet of inundation in areas near the waterfront and along the coast can be expected.

A gale watch is also in effect for Hampton Roads. Wind gusts of 30 to 45 mph are expected, but some peak gusts could be higher.
