Jay-Z’s nonprofit organization announced the launch of an empowering program focused on financial education at the nation’s HBCUs .
On Wednesday (November 13), the Shawn Carter Foundation, created by rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z, announced the beginning of the Champions for Financial Literacy Program at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. The goal of the program is to impart robust financial education to the students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities as well as their neighboring communities, including giving them tools for managing their personal finances in real time. The initiative is set to start next spring.
The Champions for Financial Literacy Program will start at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, Norfolk State University, and Virginia State University before expanding to other HBCUs. The Shawn Carter Foundation has joined forces with the Coalition for Equity and Opportunity to make the program a reality. They also obtained financial support from Toyota Motors North America and partnered with the Bridges to Wealth program run by Wharton, which serves the Philadelphia and New York areas. The nonprofit group has previously donated $20 million to marginalized groups for scholarship programs and community outreach efforts. They’ve also partnered with former Twitter founder Jack Dorsey in the past to form The Bitcoin Academy, a financial literacy program catering to the community at the Marcy Houses in Brooklyn, New York where Jay-Z grew up.
