Virginia Zoo mourns loss of 17-year-old emu Shilling

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Shilling, a 17-year-old emu at the Virginia Zoo, passed away on Dec. 12.

In a Facebook post , the Virginia Zoo disclosed that the emu died during a veterinary procedure to investigate his recent weight loss.

The results of the necropsy are pending.

Shilling had been at the Virginia Zoo since 2010 with his companion Lester. Lester was euthanized earlier this year at the age of 21 due to his arthritis no longer being manageable with pain medication.

There are currently no more emus at the zoo.
