HAMPTON, Va. – A 26-year-old man was sentenced on Monday to 40 years of active time in prison for a 2021 shooting that left another man dead. Jaylin Divyne Avery received the sentence in Hampton Circuit Court. He shot and killed DeShawn Powell, 20, of Newport News, at 7:22 p.m. on July 22, 2021, at the Papa John’s Pizza location in the 200 block of East Mercury Boulevard.
