Man calling on Virginia Beach to pay for damage after hitting pothole

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man is calling on the city of Virginia Beach to reimburse him for damages to his tire after he struck a pothole on Newtown Road in April.

“I hit something,” said Thomas Harris. “I thought it was like a stump or something. It was a pothole, and I instantly heard my tire go “ssss” and I looked at the gauge on my truck, and the air pressure was going down.”

Harris pulled over and filed a police report, and then he went to the city to turn in his invoices for proof of the repairs.

“Got all my necessary invoices so far of what it would cost to repair my vehicle, sent those in, actually got them date stamped and everything,” Harris said. “This happened on April 22. They told me it take about four-to-six weeks. I gave them six-to-eight weeks.”

Harris said the city then denied his claim.

“Someone has to actually report it, which I did when it happened,” Harris said, “and she said we have to send our team out, our road team out, to actually investigate the pothole and repair it. Well, I went up there a couple days later [and] the hole was repaired.”
