VIRGINIA BEACH — Help has arrived for the never-ending fight against Mother Nature in Virginia Beach where storms, wind and waves erode the coastline.
The resort area beach and Croatan Beach will receive an infusion of sand over the next several months. Manson Construction Co. has mobilized sand replenishment equipment at 37th Street. The contractor will begin placing sand along the first segment from 23rd to 15th streets beginning Jan. 13.
Manson will then work northward to 46th Street, wrapping up the project June 1, said Mark Haviland, spokesperson for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District.
In total, roughly 950,000 cubic yards of sand will be deposited between 15th and 45th streets. The sand will be dredged from the Atlantic Ocean Channel in Norfolk. The corps is deepening the channel for use by large container vessels calling on the Port of Virginia.
Virginia Beach resort beach will remain open throughout the replenishment process except within the orange safety fenced areas.
