PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Two Virginia State Police troopers were struck by vehicles that had lost control in poor road conditions due to the snow that had fallen, according to Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police.

Anaya spoke on the phone with 10 On Your Side during a live interview Thursday morning regarding the recent crashes that occurred as a result of the snow and poor road conditions, recounting an overnight incident in which two troopers were struck.

The first trooper was hit by a vehicle while responding to a vehicle that had run off the roadway.

The responding trooper was struck by a different vehicle while they were exiting their car. Shortly after, another trooper responded to help the first trooper and was also struck by a vehicle. See the full interview in the video player above.

“We’ve had some troopers hit overnight by motorists that are losing control of their vehicles,” Anaya said.

As of midnight Wednesday, Feb. 19, State Police troopers responded to 861 incidents and investigated 223 crashes, with 11 reported injuries. State Police said the majority of the incidents are of drivers who have spun out of control and were driving too fast for the weather conditions.
