Power outages reported throughout southeastern Va., northeastern N.C. due to winter storm

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Many areas throughout southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina lost power on Wednesday in the midst of heavy snowfall throughout the region.

Drivers urged to avoid roads as heavy snowfall blankets Hampton Roads

According to Dominion Energy, nearly 7,500 customers lost power at some point in the region, with a peak outage of 3,200 customers losing power all at once around 3 a.m. on Thursday. The regions primarily impacted by the outages have been Chesapeake and the Albemarle region of North Carolina.

As of 8 a.m., there are just over 300 outages still reported throughout the region.

Officials with Dominion Energy said that while the winter storm is not expected to cause many widespread outages, they are closely monitoring for ice in northeastern North Carolina. Crews began setting up prior to the snowfall Wednesday, bringing chains for tires, full tanks of gas for trucks and supplier groups staged in place.

Additional crews from South Carolina and Virginia remain on standby if more assistance is needed throughout our area.

Dominion crews are asking residents to remain inside to allow space for workers to do their jobs.
