Crews prepare for potential wind-related power outages

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Appalachian Power crews are preparing for potential power outages as frequent 40-45 mph wind gusts are expected in parts of the company’s Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia service area Thursday.

“We are always monitoring the weather for events that could damage our electrical facilities and cause power outages,” said Jason Baker, Appalachian Power’s vice president of distribution. “With forecasts of damaging winds today, our employees and contractors are equipped to respond to emergency storm restoration work.”

Forecasters say the greatest threat in Appalachian Power’s service area is in parts of far southwest Virginia south into Tennessee, where wind speeds could reach 50 mph. In West Virginia, wind gusts between 25-35 mph are expected in the state’s westernmost counties…
