CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A Chesapeake World War II hero whose service included the Battle of Iwo Jima has passed away, family members said.
Edward Vincek was a farmer-turned-corporal in the Marines. During WWII, he fought with the 5th Marine Division at Iwo Jima for the entirety of the 36-day battle, which has been recognized as one of the bloodiest campaigns in U.S. history.
But today, many in Chesapeake simply knew him as Eddie, and after the war he became a Charter Member of the Grassfield Ruritan Club for 69 years. His family said Vincek volunteered for Meals on Wheels, was a dedicated blood donor, avid gardener, loved to travel, and was very dedicated to his community…
