Damaging 60 mph wind gusts, scattered thunderstorms possible as storm moves through Hampton Roads

Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible in Hampton Roads Monday, thanks to a storm system moving across the South and into the region Monday night.

Jeff Orrock, meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service in Wakefield, said the biggest risk for Monday evening is high winds. Currently, the region has a “slight” risk for severe thunderstorms, or a level 2 out of 5. During storms, damaging wind gusts could reach 60 mph and “isolated large hail” could happen in northern parts of the region, toward Richmond. Isolated tornadoes are also possible.

“The dew points are actually running a little higher than the forecast, so we got some good moisture,” Orrock said. “We have some good heating all day long, so you do start to see things trying to fill in and develop as the storm system gets east of the mountains.”…
